With Super Rugby Pacific and Super Rugy Aupiki kicking off over the past couple of weeks, it has been awesome seeing a number of Manawatū players making their debuts. 

  • Jordi Viljoen debuted for the Hurricanes against the Western Force, picking up a try in the process. 
  • Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula played his first competition game for the Fijian Drua against the Blues and followed it up with another start against Moana Pasifika. .
  • Elinor-Plum King, Paige Lush, and Sam Taylor made their debuts for the Hurricanes Poua, with Elinor-Plum scoring a try.

ROBINSON & TRIGGS NAMED TURBOS ASSISTANT COACHES

We have our Turbos Assistant Coaches locked in for 2024 and they need little introduction to rugby fans. Former Southland, Highlanders, and Chiefs back Robbie Robison joins the coaching set up, while long-time Turbo Hayden Triggs is back after serving as Assistant Coach last season.

MANAWATŪ PLAYERS IN ACTION FOR HURRICANES HUNTERS AND UNDER 20S

Manawatū players Vernon Bason, Sam Coles, Josh Taula, Pena Va'a, Liam O'Connor, Misinale Epenisa, and Joe Gavigan turned out for the Hurricanes Hunters (the Hurricanes' development team) against Chiefs Development on 23 February. The Hunters picked up the win 35-34.

We also had a number of our young players in action for the Hurricanes Under 20s on 2 March. The Hurricanes had two teams play on the day - one against the Crusaders in Blenheim and another against the Chiefs in Taupo. Vernon Bason, Mosese Bason, Jai Tamati, Liam O'Connor, Pita Manamanaivalu, and Sam Coles were part of the team that played the Crusaders, while Sam Dyer, Reuben Nelley, Jack Delaney, Ajae Hansen, and Mativa Fonua took on the Chiefs. A final squad of 28 will be picked for the Super Rugby Next Gen tournament, which is taking place in Taupo from 13 March to 24 March.
