Rugby Smart Course

All Secondary Schools and Senior coaches will be require register through their school or club Sporty page and complete the online module before they attend the practical session and become a certificated coach in 2021. 

A course concentrating on injury prevention through the coaching of good techniques, this course is a great opportunity to meet other coaches involved in club and secondary school rugby to discuss likely trends and possible focus areas for 2021, coaches also receive a Coaching Diary and other coaching resources available from New Zealand Rugby.

Small Blacks Coaching Course

The 2020 NZR Coaching Small Blacks Rugby Course is a 1.5 hour theory and practical course which will provide coaches and parents with knowledge and skills to assist with coaching and refereeing Junior Rugby.

The practical coaching sessions will be split into the three age groups that make up Small Black Rugby, Beginning (Rippa), Learning (8-10) and Playing (11-13). These are an open forum where new coaches get the opportunity to learn from other coaches with experience in their particular grade.

Online Coach registration


Coach registration will now be done online and each coach must attend either Rugby Smart or Small Blacks coaching course. Coaches must attend a course as these are a mandatory requirement of coaching any team.

Rugby Smart coaches coaching players over 13 years of age should not complete the driver license field. Small Black coaches can now complete the police vetting consent form online within the NZR coach registration form. Coaches simply complete the driver's license field and agree to the terms and conditions in the form. Coaches must bring their two forms of ID to the course so the coach facilitator can confirm your attendance.
