Big scores aplenty in week two

Week two of McDonald’s Manawatu Senior One Club rugby shone a light on the chasm between the competition’s leading six and bottom three teams.

Three teams exceeded 70 points over the weekend with Feilding, 78, Kia Toa, 85, and Feilding Old Boys-Oroua, 90, dropping the hammer on injury-depleted sides Freyberg, Linton Army and Te Kawau respectively.

At least College Old Boys and Varsity lived up to expectations as they battled out a competitive 80 minutes with COB finishing on top 19-0.

The Varsity scrum had the wood on COB for much of match, but their backs were well contained by their COB counterparts.

COB opened the scoring about 20 minutes into the match when Stewart Cruden put Willie Paia’aua in space with a cut-out pass and the wing fed fullback Andre Taylor on the inside for the try.

The penalties were coming thick and fast for both teams and when Varsity flanker Doug Juszcyak rushed through the side of a COB ruck after a Taylor line-break, he found himself spending 10-minutes on the sideline for the second consecutive week.

COB wasted little time in responding.

Three minutes after the card was shown, COB attacked a seven-man Varsity scrum 5m out from the tryline, blowing right over the ball and setting No 8 Sei Grewe with the easy score.

From there the teams battled out in the close exchanges with the COB forwards, led by Cory Purton and Johnny Galloway, looking stronger than Varsity’s pack.

The Sky Blues’ best were halfback Bryn Wilson, No 8 Jacob Milan and prop Sam Tufuga.

The final try came 10 minutes from fulltime when James Tofa, who had been shut down well for most of the match, shook off a tackler and set Devon Scott away for a try.

Feilding Yellows came into their match hurting from a first-round defeat to Old Boys-Marist and quickly set to taking out their frustrations on a Freyberg side that had to turn to regular lock Andrew Wood to pack down at prop so they could field a team.

Wood, who is proving to be the heart and soul of the club doubling as chairman and one of the side’s most consistent performers, played admirably in his new role, but it was not enough to steam the flow of a rampant Feilding attack.

It was until the 13th minute that Yellows troubled the score-keepers after a blindside-dart from prop-cum-lock Sean Rankin set halfback Griffin Culver away under the sticks.

No 8 Hayden Stratford and flanker Api Ratugolea were the stars for Yellows as they bagged 11 tries.

Te Kawau made the trip to Kimbolton minus 11-frontline players to take on Feilding Old Boys-Oroua.

The defending champions showed no mercy as they picked the Real Blokes apart for a 90-10 win.

Regular hooker Sam Stewart packed down at No 8 where he was one of the best for his side.

The Stags cut their opponents to shreds out wide with Ollie Brosnahan and Shai Wiperi proving particularly dangerous.

Jamie Perigo and Shaq Waara both picked up hat-tricks for FOB-Oroua.

Te Kawau’s sole try came late as halfback Te Ringa O’Brien scampered over from the back of a scrum.

Linton Army started their match against Kia Toa on a strong-note, but Kia Toa’s all-out assault saw them ultimately crumble to an 85-7 defeat.

Just three minutes into the game, Linton halfback Troy Sherriff shot off on a cross-field solo run, spying a hole in the defence and racing 30m for the 7-0 lead.

But that lead did not last long with Kia Toa halfback Alex Metekingi crossing from the back of the scrum in the eighth minute.

Linton showed signs off life as they clung on for the next 20 minutes, before the tries started to flow for Kia Toa.

Brayden Iose, Jackson Iose, Lifeimi Mafi, Michael Tagicakibau and Taumutu Afemui-Nohitima all played big roles as the military men faded.
