Potene Paewai to coach Freyberg Senior 1s

Freyberg RFC is pleased to announce the appointment of Potene Paewai as the Head Coach of their Senior As for the 2020 club rugby season.

Paewai returns to Freyberg after a five-year hiatus during which time he has helped to get the Manukura rugby programme up and running. The last time Paewai was at Freyberg, the senior team recorded 10 wins over his two seasons in charge. Potene is looking forward to the family atmosphere that Freyberg provides along with the challenge of the underdog status.

Potene has seen the pathway that the club has taken by promoting youth and is excited to continue this approach whilst focusing on player development with the hope that these players will not only develop into a quality team in years to come but also push for higher representative honours.

Paewai comes with a wealth of coaching experience having coached at various levels since 2000 where he coached the Feilding Old Boys U19’s. Since then he has coached Hato Pāora College 1st XV, Feilding Old Boys Senior A, Feilding Old Boys-Oroua Senior A, Freyberg Senior A, Manawatu Māori, Manawatu U20s and most recently the Manawatu U16s.

Paewai also enjoys coaching Touch where he has coached various Manawatu age grade teams and he has just returned from Australia where he coached the New Zealand Under 16 Mixed team.

Potene is looking forward to the 2020 season and linking up with Dan Turnock and Bruce Hemara who will continue in their Assistant roles.

Taleva Igasia will contniue his enduring involvement with Freyberg by taking on the Senior B Head Coaching role for 2020.
