Turbos quartet in sevens squad

A quartet of Turbos has bolstered the Manawatu Men’s Sevens team ahead of the Central Region Sevens in Levin on Saturday, but it could be one of the side’s lesser known names who steals the show.

Varsity wing Reece Brosnan has been one of the stars of Manawatu’s preseason campaign.

His on-field performances during the season so far back up a strong start to the Manawatu club season which was cruelly cut short by a serious neck injury.

Since making his comeback to the field, Brosnan has been one of the leading lights of the sevens programme with his combination in the midfield with Turbos wing Te Rangatira Waitokia.

Along with Waitokia, Turbos teammates wing Ben Werthmuller, utility James Tofa and loose forward Brice Henderson have also been named in Saturday’s 12-man squad.

Also in the team is Feilding Old Boys-Oroua outside back Shai Wiperi, who spent time with the Turbos in preseason.

Manawatu academy halfback/ outside back Tobias Wickham-Manuel is in the team after a strong showing at the Red Bull Ignite Sevens tournament last week.

Feilding Old Boys-Oroua loose forward Hamish Bennett and outside back Ollie Brosnahan, Linton Army speedster Jarred Deal, College Old Boys centre Patrick Tafili-Reid and wing Alipate Natoba round out the team.

Coach Glen Christini said the team had prepared well for the tournament.

“The boys have worked really hard over the last four-six weeks.  We have had a major focus on conditioning and ball handling and to their credit the whole squad has bought into the process, I really couldn't have asked for a better group.  We have had a lot of game time with a Wellington hit out tournament, and regular mid-week hit outs including Wanganui last week.”

He said it was important the team get into their work early on Saturday.

“The challenge for the boys will be settling down early on Saturday and getting into our work.  If we can get into our patterns and play our game it should make for an interesting and entertaining day out. Our focus as a team is simply to qualify for Nationals, if we are accurate and get that done through pool play we will have a conversation within ourselves at the half way point of the day and decide what we can achieve from there.”
