Manawatu Under 19s secure win over Hurricanes Heartland
Manawatu Under 19s booked themselves a spot in the top division of the Jock Hobbs National Championship starting next weekend in Taupo with a hard-fought 19-14 victory over the Hurricanes Heartland Under 20s at Bill Brown Park on Saturday.
It was Manawatu’s fourth game of the regional qualifiers and saw them finish with a three win-one loss record to secure a place against the bigger Unions at the nationals.
Saturday’s match wasn’t the prettiest to view at the sun-dredged venue but Manawatu got the job done.
Talented loose-forward Tyler Laubscher demonstrated plenty of leg drive to power over from close range to give Manawatu an early lead. However, the Heartland team came back and contested well at the breakdown and scored a seven pointer to make the score at halftime 12-7 in Manawatu’s favour after Korie Winters dotted down for the home side.
The second half was punctuated by errors from both teams with the highlight being Winters’ second try of the game to cap off a slick backline move mid-way through the half.
