Former All Black and international rugby star Ngani Laumape has signed with the Higgins Concrete Manawatū Turbos for the 2025 and 2026 Bunnings NPC seasons, marking a powerful homecoming for one of the province’s most celebrated rugby products.
A proud graduate of Palmerston North Boys’ High School and the Manawatū rugby pathway, Laumape made his provincial debut for the Turbos in 2016. Before that, he spent two seasons in the NRL with the New Zealand Warriors, showcasing his strength and explosive talent as a dual-code athlete.
Laumape returned to rugby union with the Hurricanes, where his dynamic midfield play earned him 15 Test caps for the All Blacks between 2017 and 2020. More recently, he played in Japan’s League One with the Kobelco Kobe Steelers. In 2026, he is set to return to Super Rugby, signing with Moana Pasifika.
Doug Tietjens, CEO of Manawatū Rugby, said:
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Ngani Laumape back to the green and white jersey for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. He’s at a point in his career where his leadership within the playing group will be critical, and he carries immense mana based on everything he has achieved in rugby. His return is a massive boost for our squad, our supporters, and the wider rugby community. We know he’ll bring experience, inspiration, and explosive energy to the Turbos, and we can’t wait to see him back in the jersey again.”
Wes Clarke, Head of Performance Rugby, added:
“I’m very excited to work with Ngani again. His experience will be invaluable for the young players, while his impact on games will be exciting for our fans. He has often talked to me about his passion for this province, so I’m looking forward to seeing him run out in the jersey.”
Laumape’s return reflects Manawatū Rugby’s ongoing commitment to reconnecting with local talent and strengthening provincial pride.
Ngani Laumape said:
“Coming home to play in front of my family again is a huge part of my why. I’m proud to wear the green and white again and help bring Manawatū rugby back to where it belongs.”
Laumape will link up with the Higgins Concrete Manawatū Turbos squad ahead of pre-season training for the 2025 NPC campaign.
