Manawatū Rugby Union Mourns Passing of Former Turbos Head Coach Peter Russell

It is with deep sadness that Manawatū Rugby Union acknowledges the passing of Peter Charles Russell, who served as Head Coach of the Turbos from 2019 to 2022.

Peter’s coaching career left an indelible mark on our union and wider rugby community. Before joining Manawatū, he led coaching stints with Wairarapa Bush (2003–2006), Hawke’s Bay (2007–2011) and internationally in Japan with the NEC Green Rockets. His commitment to player development, strategic leadership, and fostering a strong team culture will long be remembered.  During his tenure as Turbos Head Coach, Peter worked tirelessly to guide and uplift his squad, building relationships founded on respect, discipline, and a love for the game. He embraced our values: belief, connection, and ownership of the future.

On behalf of Manawatū Rugby Union, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Peter’s whānau, friends, colleagues, and all connected to rugby who were touched by his life and work. May his legacy continue to inspire.

Statement from Manawatū Rugby Union Chief Executive Officer Doug Tietjens  “I had the opportunity to work with Pete when he was appointed the Turbo’s Head Coach in 2019. He had such an optimism for the province that I enjoyed. His dedication and passion for rugby made a profound difference in the Manawatū community. His guidance shaped many careers and contributed to our union’s legacy. We are deeply saddened by his passing and honoured to carry forward the lessons he taught our thoughts are with Nadine and his whanau.”
