.Varsity grabs the last playoff spot

Varsity’s surge into the Hankins Shield playoffs was complete on Saturday with a 43-21 victory over the defending champions Feilding Old Boys Oroua in the final round of the McDonald’s Senior 1 club rugby competition.

The Sky Blues have been in winning form for the past month as they looked to secure a playoff spot. The six-try victory over the Stags sees Varsity tackle top-of-the-table College Old Boys in one Hankins Shield semi-final next week.

At Arena, it was a battle of the heavy weights as Centennial Shield winners College Old Boys hosted Feilding with both sides probably having a lazy eye on the playoffs, just seven days away.

Feilding stretched out to a 21-12 lead at halftime before COB clocked up the points in the second spell with the game finishing a 34-34 draw.

Old Boys Marist, who face Feilding in the second Hankins Shield semi-final next week, warmed up for the playoffs with a comfortable 62-3 win over Freyberg.

Meanwhile at Rongotea, Te Kawau ran out two-point winners against Kia Toa by 27-25. The two sides will do battle again in the Val Holland Trophy semi-final next Saturday.

The semi-finalists are:
Hankins Shield: College Old Boys (1) vs Varsity (4); Feilding (2) vs Old Boys Marist (3).
Val Holland Trophy: Feilding Old Boys Oroua (5) vs Freyberg (8); Kia Toa (6) vs Te Kawau (7).
