Six Manawatū players have been selected in the Hurricanes Under 20 team for the Super Rugby U20 tournament.
Vernon Bason (hooker), Mosese Bason (number 8), Pita Manamanaivalu (utility back), Liam O’Connor (first five-eighth), Jai Tamati (halfback), and Sam Coles (outside back) have been named in the side.
The Super Rugby U20 tournament takes place in Taupo from 16 March to 23 March.
For Vernon Bason and Coles, this is their second year in the Hurricanes Under 20s. Mosese Bason, Manamanaivalu, O’Connor, and Tamati were all in the Hurricanes Under 18 team last year.
All six of the players are currently in the Manawatū Rugby Academy programme.
2023 New Zealand Secondary Schools prop Logan Wallace was not available for selection due to injury.
The six players along with fellow Manawatū players Sam Dyer, Reuben Nelley, Jack Delaney, Ajae Hansen, and Mativa Fonua took part in a Hurricanes Under 20 development camp at the start of the month. Players were split into two teams, with one playing the Crusaders and the other taking on the Chiefs. From there, the final squad was selected.
Manawatū Rugby Academy Manager Lifeimi Mafi says, “Massive congratulations to all our players who have been named in the Super Rugby U20 tournament. We’re extremely proud of the growth, drive, and commitment from all our players to excel at the next level.”
